Biological Museum / Specimen Storage & Display Venue

Initiative TitleBiological Museum / Specimen Storage & Display Venue
Submitted in Previous Year(s)No
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, RationaleWith the construction of the new Science Facility on the Middletown Campus the Biology Department would like to create an area where specimens of unique biological interest can be displayed in exhibit format. The Department has a rare collection of zoological specimens ( Gunther Collection), skulls, and botanical materials which we would like to showcase given an appropriate venue. Additionally, this facility could be used to present student research projects and similar presentations on a rotating basis. It is expected that such exhibits will lead to increasing interest in and awareness of science, the environment and sustainability generally. From a practical point of reference, this facility would also provide necessary storage space in an easily accessed, centralized area.
Consequences of this initiative not being fundedDiminished opportunity to display specimens in an educationally meaningful way. Currently, many wonderful specimens are stored in cabinets and drawers and rarely ( other than in formal classes ) can be viewed.
