The department secretary was hired for diagnostic imaging only, however when the medical laboratory part time secretary resigned quit some years ago LuAnn took on this role and responsibilities as well. While a part time replacement was supposed to be hired, this never happened and Ms. Haviland continues to work above her pay rate and take on more work than what she was hired for. 

It is our understanding that some years ago this was investigated and the county denied the prior chair's request (both Ron K. and Rosa) to promote her for the work she has been doing above and beyond her classification. This will be investigated and pursued again though it will take time.

While a part time secretary could be hired for Med Lab, we are currently on a hiring freeze but that also means a new employee would need to be trained and so forth which takes time, energy, and more money than if she was simply moved up a tier as she should be. This is limited in the department as is. 

Consequences of this initiative not being funded

Ms. Haviland could simply no longer help the Medical Laboratory program which would be a tragedy, but she was not hired for or being paid for the work she is doing. She is a good person and does a wonderful job for both the radiologic technology department and medical laboratory department as well. Students, med lab, and ultimately customer service would suffer is stopped helping their department which would be a tragedy.

Institutional Goals

Ms. Haviland greatly promotes student safety and provides support services to both the Rad Tech students, Med Lab students, staff, and faculty in both of our departments.
Ms. Haviland is an amazing instutional resource on various levels. From helping our students in so many ways whether it is making copies for them, sending documentation for them to clinical sites, helping organize pre-admission seminars, writing memos, upkeeping our departments websites, and the list goes on and on.
I am not sure how much integrity we hold if we have an individual working above their pay level or out of the scope of what they were hired for. Promoting Ms. Haviland would certainly rectify that.
Ms. Haviland is an amazing institutional resource on various levels. Her dedication to the students, department and committees cannot be measured.
While another faculty member could be hired as "part time" to fill the open spot for a Med Lab secretary, we have a hiring freeze at the moment and for what ever reason the spot has not filled for some years. Ms. Haviland has been and is perfectly capable of continuing the job on behalf of both of the departments. This would save the college money from hiring another staff member and also from paying another salary, benefits and taking time to train a new individual.
