Creation of Full Time Instructional Designer position to assist in Academic Technology area

Initiative TitleCreation of Full Time Instructional Designer position to assist in Academic Technology area
Submitted in Previous Year(s)2018
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

In order to increase the support provided for online learning training for faculty, staff and students, additional help is critical.  We have been operating for more than 16 years with only one main person supporting online learning.  If the program is to continue and expand successfully, we need a concerted effort toward quality course design, faculty training, course refreshing, and more support for students.  The additional instructional designer would provide additional hours needed for these efforts.

Consequences of this initiative not being funded

We have only one person supporting online learning for faculty on both campuses.  The Open SUNY Help Desk supports technical questions for students and faculty to a degree, but as a result of limited staff we cannot offer as many online or Blackboard-related trainings as we would like.  In addition, there is no back-up person for the Academic Technology area.  Hiring a second instructional designer would provide much needed expansion and secondary support.

Institutional Goals

Goal How will the initiative support this institutional goal?
There is only one person on campus supporting the administration of the Blackboard LMS, providing faculty training for online learning, faculty support for Blackboard, and serving academic technology needs. The online program has continued to grow but we have not kept pace with growth in support staff. Additional staff are needed for continuity planning, backups, and to provide adequate support on both campuses for students and faculty. The academic technology area could provide expanded training for students and faculty which is not possible with current staffing levels.
Assistance with student workshops will provide training and additional help for those using Blackboard, having questions about it or who are unfamiliar with the technology in general. In addition, having another person who can answer questions or provide one-on-one assistance will increase the level of service we can provide to students.
The goal is to provide start of semester workshops for students at both campuses in how to use Blackboard for their courses. Students receive their new start orientation, but I would like to do a hands-on workshop in using Blackboard as well to help give them the best start possible.
Providing additional help with Blackboard will also help facilitate student success in their courses, facilitate growth by increasing technology skills, and may facilitate completion by providing students with more confidence to complete their studies.
Additional staff will allow for more comprehensive, ongoing support for students in their academic endeavors.
Many faculty are using Blackboard as a supplement to their developmental courses. Students in these classes may need extra help with not only Blackboard but technology in general. Additional staff in the Academic Technology area will allow the opportunity for expanded support for students.
Academic Technology support for students will help them to achieve their academic goals. This will help toward student retention, completion, transfer and employment readiness. Many businesses use Blackboard for employee training and organizational groups. Other schools use Blackboard, so students who gain a solid understanding of the functionality while at Orange can take those tech skills with them to other schools or employment.
Providing additional staffing to support students and faculty in the academic technology and online learning areas will demonstrate that the college IS supportive to its students and faculty, and that budget is being allocated toward improving the support environment.
We can more effectively use Blackboard and other college-provided online systems by helping students to better understand how to use these resources. Providing training in the use of online Library resources, GSuite applications (Gmail, Google Drive, Google Apps) can also be very beneficial to students. Workshops could be held monthly for these and other academic technology questions which students may have.
Additional staff would allow expanding Blackboard training for students as well as faculty. Providing training and support for students in the use of Blackboard can help students develop confidence with technology skills, help them to utilize the resources faculty are posting online, and provide a sense that the college is there to support them in all college-provided technologies.
Student-focused workshops will be developed and delivered in-person and online to provide additional support for students in the use of Blackboard, the library, and other college-provided services to help them improve academic outcomes.
