Initiative Title | Dedicated Library Instruction Classroom for Newburgh |
---|---|
Submitted in Previous Year(s) | 2015 |
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale | A Library instruction classroom at Newburgh campus is needed to equalize services provided to our Newburgh students and faculty. The library at Middletown has a dedicated library instruction classroom, and the method of providing both lecture and guided, hands-on practice in a computer lab setting has proven to be successful in strengthening students’ information literacy skills. As necessary to support the “one college, two campuses” mission and to provide an equal learning experience for all SUNY Orange students, no matter which campus students attend, students and faculty should be able to have hands-on experience to practice the skills necessary to locate information, evaluate information critically and use information effectively. |
Consequences of this initiative not being funded | To schedule a computer lab for library instruction on the Newburgh campus, librarians must contact central scheduling to reserve a room for each instance. Within the Kaplan Building, there are two lab locations that are set-up with 25 computers, that can be reserved for this purpose. Because scheduling of instruction sessions are at the point of need, we can not predict when sessions will be scheduled and there have been times when we have been unable to book a lab. By acquiring a dedicated space, the services can be scheduled and delivered in a predictable fashion, with no instructors or students turned away. |
