Initiative Title | Establish Involvement Lounges on both campuses |
Submitted in Previous Year(s) | No |
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale | In order to help students explore the co-curricular opportunities open to them at SUNY Orange, the Center for Student Involvement is seeking to establish Involvement Lounges on both campuses. The Newburgh Campus Involvement Lounge would be located in the area between the CSI and the Cafeteria. The Middletown Campus Involvement Lounge would be located just outside the CSI where the Information Desk is currently located. This is a particularly good location as it is in a high visibility/traffic area just inside the Student Center's main entrance. Both Involvement Lounges would feature:
- Comfortable furniture where students can spend time between classes
- Wireless access with information linking students to online resources
- An information board highlighting campus clubs, when and where they meet and any upcoming events they are sponsoring as well as information on how to start a new club
- BOA Central-the main information center on campus for the Board of Activities, spotlighting their past and upcoming events and how students can join
- Student Government Central-the main information center on campus for the Student Senate, including information on who the senators are, what initiatives they are currently working on, and how to get in touch with/get involved with the Senate
- Leadership Clearinghouse-easily readable brochures with information on a number of leadership topics relevant to clubs and student leaders such as running an effective meeting, communication basics, recruiting and retaining members, fundraising and many others
These lounges would be self-service, so students can browse at their leisure, but CSI staff would be close by to assist and answer questions. |
Consequences of this initiative not being funded | Studies have shown that students who participate in at least one co-curricular activity are:
- more successful academically
- more likely to persist to their final goal (graduation, transfer, etc)
- gaining experiences that are valuable to transfer schools as well as potential employers
- more satisfied with their college experience overall, which is beneficial to retention
These areas are key to making sure students are aware of opportunities available to them. |
