Full Time Tenure Track Physics Instructor

Initiative Title Full Time Tenure Track Physics Instructor
Submitted in Previous Year(s)2012
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

In recent years three full time physics and engineering faculty have retired and two have been replaced. Currently some 50% of our the physics and engineering courses are being covered by adjunct instructors and retired professors.  Many of these adjuncts have stated that they will truly retire in the next few years (Cummins, Moore, McGee).  The rigorous nature of the physics and engineering courses makes finding a qualified adjunct a difficult task. It is imperative that the department secure a full time instructor to maintain the high level of excellence that the physics and engineering program is known for.

Consequences of this initiative not being funded

It is difficult to find part-time physics/engineering professors with the appropriate background to teach our college level physics offerings. If skilled adjuncts cannot be found the courses will be canceled. Maintaining the laboratory space and advising students requires the dedication of full time faculty.

Department GoalsProvide a high quality, rigorous and meaningful Engineering curricula which will prepare students for transfer to upper division universities. , Hire, develop and retain diverse, high quality faculty and staff to engage and support students in science, engineering and architectural education, research and development.
