Geppetto: Extraordinary Extremities - theatre performance and master class

Initiative TitleGeppetto: Extraordinary Extremities - theatre performance and master class
Submitted in Previous Year(s)No
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

Geppetto: Extraordinary Extremities is performed by Concrete Temple Theatre CTT (Carlo Adinolfi & Renee Philippi). CTT incorporates drama, puppetry, music, and the visual arts, focusing on the individual's struggle for identity and society's struggle for cohesion.

For SUNY Orange’s purposes, the program will be multifaceted with two performances—one in English and one in Spanish—and a master class puppetry workshop. The production can be enjoyed by all ages and cuts across cultural divides. The play and workshop will outreach to the college community and community-at-large which includes children, teens, adult, and senior citizens, and the disabled.

A tale of resilience and adaptation, the play involves the main character improvising to overcome the challenges of performing while devising new storylines, new characters, and even new limbs for his puppet hero. The New York Times described the play as one that "celebrates human ingenuity."  The workshop centers on puppetry creation and manipulation techniques and is offered to students and the community.

Geppetto: Extraordinary Extremities will have long arms into the college community with special awareness made available to the Office of Accessibility Services and to local organizations and agencies, such as Safe Harbors. Theatre and art students and community-at-large will benefit from this program.

Consequences of this initiative not being funded

Because of the low amount presently allocated to Cultural Affairs events on the Newburgh campus, this programming would be at a much smaller scope or not performed at all and/or in order to have it, there will be fewer other events.

Institutional Goals

Goal How will the initiative support this institutional goal?
This play and master class will engage learners in an environment that develops their knowledge. The play will serve in developing effective communication through the main character’s improvisation and creative thinking. The performance will bring together community and presents themes that enhance their awareness of different capabilities. The performances being offered in two languages will encompass cultural diversity. The puppet workshop is a master class that develops skills in the creative process and expression to produce a workable puppet. Learning the manipulation of the puppet allows the participant an additional means of communication.
This programming will establish an outreach to the college community and especially to the Office of Accessibility Services because of the elements of ingenuity, resilience, and adaptability. Offering two presentations of the play—one in English and one in Spanish—will directly service an underserved community and bring together diverse family groups. Collaborating with an outstanding local organization such as Safe Harbors will help make this happen.
Recognizing diversity within all community, be it cultural or ability, will promote mutual respect and trust. Theatre and creating the elements of it through the workshop will generate cooperation and will offer participants and attendees new voices of communication. The project will foster collaboration and strengthen community among the college and general community.
