Hire a full-time Career Development Specialist

Initiative TitleHire a full-time Career Development Specialist
Submitted in Previous Year(s)2013
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

The Office has two full-time professional staff and one grant-funded, part-time Internship Developer position.  The grant-funded position is due to expire in June of 2015. Losing this position will have a serious effect on our ability to assist the academic departments in securing internship positions for their students registered in the credit internship class.  In Fall of 2013 we placed 32 credit students and in Spring 2014 we placed 45 credit students.

We are only able to staff Newburgh one day per week and hiring a full-time person would allow us to staff the Newburgh office on 1-2 additional days.

Additional staff could assist in developing new programs and help reach out to employers.

Consequences of this initiative not being funded

Career Services representation at Newburgh will continue to be limited to one day per week and program initiatives in Newburgh will not be as robust as it could be.

Placement of credit internship students may be adversely impacted.

Department GoalsIdentify up to 5 new business partners who will actively engage with the Office by posting job openings and internships, participating in employer panels, and other career development activitivies., Develop a minimum of three new career development activities.

Institutional Goals

Goal How will the initiative support this institutional goal?
The internship placement position is critical to our ability to continue supporting the academic programs which require internships for graduation.
An additional staff person can assist with efforts to reach out to the business community.
An additional person assigned to Newburgh can begin to foster relationships with the employer community, inviting them to participate in programming initiatives such as employer panels, internships, service learning opportunities, and career fairs.
Presently, we have a career service representative in Newburgh only one day per week. The additional staff person would allow us to increase the days per week to 2.5.
