Host voter engagement and Constitution Day on campus multiple times a year in a creative way to entice students to register to vote

Initiative TitleHost voter engagement and Constitution Day on campus multiple times a year in a creative way to entice students to register to vote
Submitted in Previous Year(s)No
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

For the past few years, the expectation has fallen to the Center for Student Involvement to host Constitution Day and Voter Engagement on campus.

Alongside distributing the U.S. Constitution, the department connects with a non-partisan voter engagement group to encourage students to vote. This program been funded out of the Student Activity Fund and the department is expected to run it at least in the Fall, with additional voter registration in the Spring. We have hosted this on both the Newburgh and Middletown campuses. Between both campuses, 78 students were registered to vote in the Fall 2024 semester. Given that the college wants to see these initiatives completed, it seems appropriate that it would be funded by the college instead of the Student Activity fund.

Consequences of this initiative not being funded

As the student activity fund is highly utilized due to increasing clubs and student engagement, it cannot financially sponsor voter engagement and constitution day. Constitutions need to be purchased and the other incentives for voter registration are a huge draw to get students to the table and then encourage them to vote. Without funding, we will see a decrease in voter registrants from the college population and may not meet the requirement to make constitutions available for students.

Department GoalsIncrease voter engagement on campus by registering at least 150 students, doubling numbers from the previous year.

Institutional Goals

Goal How will the initiative support this institutional goal?
Voter engagement is a great way to increase civic engagement from our student population. Working without outside networks also promotes partnership with the county.
As many of our traditional students enter voting age, we must inform them of their right to vote and help register these students. Educating them in this area supports the student experience.
