Initiate Ultrasound AAS Program at SUNY Orange

Initiative TitleInitiate Ultrasound AAS Program at SUNY Orange
Submitted in Previous Year(s)No
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

The diagnostic imaging program strives to deliver courses relevant to the profession and in demand by the public, students, and the communities we serve.  Hospital administrators in the area have expressed interest in such a program and are willing to support it.

There are no local Ultrasound schools and the department consistently receives inquiries about whether we offer this program or where nearest school is that does. Current students who come to the department for advising often say they really want to do Ultrasound, but no school is close enough for them to attend.

We want to change this and offer the first program in Orange County or the surrounding area as an AAS degree to become an Ultrasonographer. This is a long term goal which will take much time, research, and effort and is only in the very beginning stages currently.

Institutional Goals

Goal How will the initiative support this institutional goal?
This program is highly desired by students and offering such will increase enrollment overall at the college as there will be a need for student to full-fill "core" classes associated with the degree as well as those specific to Ultrasound. This will increase employment opportunities for students in the healthcare field and supply imaging facilities with registered qualified US technologists.

Developing additional healthcare programs supports innovation and continuous improvement by offering students more education and employment opportunities through the community college. There is great need to continue education and course offerings in healthcare and we should move forward with initiatives such as these.
