Librarian training for teaching and assessing library instruction in an online environment

Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

With college instruction transitioning to mostly online librarians have had to use their existing video and Zoom skills to provide library instruction and reference for students. Starting 2018 librarians stepped up creation of library tutorial videos in collaboration with the Center for Teaching and Learning. These videos and the skills librarians acquired to create them were instrumental in providing library services after March 2020. Librarians have proven to be competent in their online library instruction efforts, however there are methods and practices that could build on their presentation and assessment skills in the online environment.

Librarians at SUNY Orange teach library instruction in a single session to a class invited into the library. This model is transferrable to an online environment using existing connection tools. It also allows for greater flexibility in topics and presentation. The pressure is high for librarians teaching single session instruction to get their desired lesson plan accomplished. In order to thrive in the online environment librarians need to be fully aware of the best practices and options for online instruction. Opportunities are available for training from various library organizations.

Librarians also meet students virtually through Blackboard. Engagement can be difficult in this platform. Maureen Larsen will teach librarians the best practices for meeting students in Blackboard to support the embedded librarian program.

The funding is to send one or two librarians to training and have those librarians share what they have learned.

Institutional Goals

Goal How will the initiative support this institutional goal?
Librarians teach research and critical thinking to students in order that they will be able to complete their assignments and learn skills they can apply beyond their education. Supporting students in an online environment is a new direction that the library can expand into.
The college's use of online presentation tools and software can be deployed most effectively when librarians have the proper training to be confident in teaching online library instruction.

Librarians teach research and critical thinking to students in order that they will be able to complete their assignments and learn skills they can apply beyond their education. Since librarians do not grade assignments we rely on secondary assessment to determine effectiveness of library instruction. Assessment of online library instruction is currently at a starting stage.
The College's COVID-19 experience shows that online college education is a necessary goal to achieve. Whether fully online or partially this option gives the college flexibility to increase availability to more students. The library recognizes the need for this transition and to support.
