Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

Lyric in a Time of War is a combination of arts that blends music/poetry/writing in a moving tribute and meditation on war and remembrance.

Tom Sleigh, multi-award-winning poet, essayist, Distinguished Professor in the MFA program at Hunter College, and Phil Klay, US Marine public affairs officer and veteran of Iraq, journalist, and National Book Award winner as author of Redeployment, will deliver readings interspersed in a concert of classical compositions.  The American String Quartet, an internationally renowned classical ensemble, will perform a program of Bach, Beethoven, Barber, Bartok, and Shostakovich.  This one performance combining literary and musical arts will take place on or near Veterans Day.

A related exhibit and lecture will create a mini series of events within the time frame of Veterans Day.

This major programming engenders substantial outreach to the general community of veterans through their organizations and agencies and community-at-large while encompassing the college community student/faculty/staff veterans as well.  This event also brings collaboration with the veterans’ coordinator and alumni relations coordinator on campus.  Music, writing, and poetry students will also be among those to benefit from this program.

Consequences of this initiative not being funded

Institutional Goals

Goal How will the initiative support this institutional goal?
Sharing what happens in time of war through visuals on exhibit and writings and firsthand knowledge from poet, writer, and lecturer provides an educational experience and brings awareness of civic responsibility, cultural diversity, and the strength of the human spirit.
Through this programming, we will reach out to the general community of veterans through their organizations and agencies while including the college community student/faculty/staff/alumni veterans as well, and consequently, we will support community building partnerships.
Creative opportunities of learning through music, poetry, writing, and exhibit will be extended to the college community with an emphasis on the veterans. By attending the performance, viewing the exhibit, and going to the lecture, attendees have the availability to interact through talkback, Q&A, and with each other.
Honoring and recognizing veterans within the context of cultural heritage will strengthen a sense of community. By collaborating with veterans through their organizations and county agencies and the college’s veterans’ coordinator and alumni relations coordinator and welcoming the community-at-large, a true communication will better promote understanding, collective responsibility, and mutual respect.
