Institutional Goals

Goal How will the initiative support this institutional goal?

Action Steps

Action Step Responsible Party Order
Make instructor recommendations on the Academic Support Application available to tutors for their reference. Coordinators of tutorial services and their assistants 1
During New Tutor Orientations and via follow-up emails, encourage new and current tutors to reach out to professors of any new tutees. Explain the benefits of doing so (tutors build connections with faculty, tutors open up a channel of communication) Coordinators of tutorial services and their assistants 2
Require tutors to introduce themselves to the instructors of any new tutees. Coordinators of tutorial services and their assistants 3
For Assessment: Require tutors to CC the Tutorial Center/Staff when contacting instructors regarding students via email. Or if tutors contact faculty directly, require them to send an email letting the TC know about the interaction. Coordinators of tutorial services and their assistants 4
For Assessment: Track how many tutors reach out to professors and how often. Do this by keeping record of the number of interactions (email or otherwise) between tutors and faculty. Refer to previous Action Step for details. Coordinators of tutorial services and their assistants 5
For Assessment: Create a sign in sheet for the referral binder to track how often tutors look at instructor referrals. Coordinators of tutorial services and their assistants 6
For Assessment: In the Student Surveys, ask students if they know that their tutor has contacted their instructor. Alternately (or in conjunction), ask students if they think their tutor understood the course objectives well. Coordinators of tutorial services and their assistants 7
For Assessment: Track which tutors where told to contact instructors by members of the Academic Support Center staff. This can be isolated to the New Tutor Orientations or to any meetings/encounters in general. Coordinators of tutorial services and their assistants 8
For Assessment: During Self-Evaluation Interview, ask New Tutors how often they contacted instructors and whether it was helpful in their tutoring sessions. Coordinators of tutorial services and their assistants 9
For Assessment: Contact instructors asking if tutors (and which ones) contacted them throughout the semester regarding a student they were working with. Track which ones, in which subjects and how often. Coordinators of tutorial services and their assistants 10
For Assessment: Compare the grades of students whose tutors contacted instructors and whose tutors did not. See if the reach out effort has an effect on student performance. *Need to consider different variables to make this comparison valid. Coordinators of tutorial services and their assistants 11
For Assessment: Use data from Tutor Surveys to see how often instructors were contacted. Coordinators of tutorial services and their assistants 12
