Offer the Computed Tomography continuing education program/certificate program again

Initiative TitleOffer the Computed Tomography continuing education program/certificate program again
Submitted in Previous Year(s)No
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

Computed Tomography is the most common and immediate post training area X-ray technologists enter upon completion of the program once they have some experience.  Our advisory committee consisting of a prior student and hospital administrators state this is a top priority- having certified CT technologists. They are very hard to find and managers are have a hard time filling these positions with qualified techs. Of course from current students there is a huge interest in this as well.

With regulations changing in the field the CT course needs to be offered with ARRT (american registry of radiologic technologists) approved CE credits OR as an academic college course which students earn a grade and submit a transcript as proof of education. Gone are the days when technologists could simply train on the job and take the registry to become CT certified.

This course is offered as  DL for the didactic learning portion with rotation out to clinical in order to get trained and log their required comps. To register for CE credits we would need to submit paper work to the recognized agency and pay them a fee. This is under investigation, but if run as CE credits which means it will go through CAPE the department believes CAPE should pay as we do not get any funds back in the department for offering this course. We will reach out to the head of CAPE about this.

Consequences of this initiative not being funded

We would not be providing prior graduates or technologists in the area a pathway to additional certification. They would need to travel a distance in order to do this or there will continue to be a shortage and lack of job opportunity in the area for this with management having difficulties filling the role.

Institutional Goals

Goal How will the initiative support this institutional goal?
A computed tomography program whether for credit hours or CE credits will help radiologic technologists in the area (perhaps even beyond NY) achieve post primary certification by providing a path to additional credentials and licensure. This will increase enrollment and interest in SUNY orange. This will increase the college’s program offerings and extensions of the Diagnostic Imaging department. The CT program didactic course is offered online to accommodate and appeal to technologists who have busy lives and work schedules. This makes the class much more accessible to a variety of people.
Partners in the area have specifically stated the need for qualified CT techs and consistently ask for such a program, so do members of the profession whether they were our students or from other colleges.
The CT program will increase enrollment whether in a CE program or if we make in an academic program.
Offering CT as an additional course or CE option adds to the colleges educational offerings.

This course could be offered as non academic credit through the continuing education department. It serves the needs of the public by providing a pathway for technologists to become registered computed tomography techs and helps employers in the area fill needed positions in the imaging department.
This courses didactic portion will be offered online.

Action Steps

Action Step Responsible Party Order
Review and update the DL portion of CT course as needed DI department, chair, coordinator and faculty 1
Decide if this course will apply for CE credits as recognized by ARRT or make academic course DI department, chair, coordinator and faculty 2
Review contracts with clinical sites to rotate students for their required exams Department staff and faculty 3

Expected Outcomes

Outcome Order
Increase enrollment at college 1
Increase post primary offerings for registered technologists 2
Increase program continuing education offerings 3
Serve our various stakeholders by helping technologists with a pathway to registration 4
Increase DL offerings a the college 5

Assessment Methods

Method Description Other Method Responsible Party
Alumni Survey Surveying program alumni can provide information about program satisfaction, preparation (transfer or workforce), employment status, skills for success. Surveys can ask alumni to identify what should be changed, altered, maintained, improved, or expanded. We already survey our grads and know there is an interest
Certification or Licensure Exam These standardized tests are developed by outside, professional organization to assess general knowledge in a discipline. students would receive certificate and be eligible for ARRT exam
Employer Survey Advancement, etc.) can survey employers to determine if their graduates are satisfactorily knowledgeable and skilled. We already do this and know there is interest
Entrance/Exit Interviews Interviews are conducted with students when they enter college and when they leave—either through graduation or early departure. These interviews can be designed to measure SLO, but can also be used to learn about students’ perceptions, gather feedback, on various college services, activities, etc. We already do this and know there is interest
Other Enter other assessment method Various phone calls from technologists all around NY state- we answer emails and calls for information DI department
