Initiative TitleOpen Educational Resources (OER) Support
Submitted in Previous Year(s)No
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

Open content and open access textbooks are instructional resources that can be used, reused, often remixed and customized under an intellectual property license that permits their free use and re-purposing by others while ensuring authors retain copyright to their work.Librarians can play many parts in OER adoption: assisting faculty to locate resources, producing informational guides, as researchers, content creators, curators, and providers of go-to copyright information. This initiative seeks to explore ways to further the support role of the Library as SUNY Orange moves forward with OER adoption.

Institutional Goals

Goal How will the initiative support this institutional goal?
Adopting and creating Open Educational Resources will offer a more affordable option for students to obtain information critical to their success at the college. Studies have shown a correlation between student success and textbook ownership. With the cost of textbooks sky rocketing, many students do not purchase the texts which puts them immediately at risk. OER's either free or at a much reduced cost, provide students a real alternative.
