Purchase new patient transfer stretcher

Initiative TitlePurchase new patient transfer stretcher
Submitted in Previous Year(s)No
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

The current patient transfer stretcher is obsolete in region compared to what our student see and use in the clinical setting. The stretcher is probably from the 1990’s and other than being outdated is breaking or malfunctioning. Students are not learning the most current equipment which leads to a disconnect when they arrive at clinical and do not know how to use modern stretchers.

LuAnn and I have researched replacing the stretcher with a modern patient transfer/ patient care stretcher and the average cost is $3,800 for a basic model. This still would not perform all the ideal functions like teaching students trauma views for the real world setting, but would be an improvement from the current model.

Consequences of this initiative not being funded

The most immediate consequence is the possibility of staff or student getting hurt using the current stretcher as the side rails have not been locking. If the side rail malfunctioned during use one could hurt a finger, hand or even arm because the old style has a metal frame which is rather heavy.

Another consequence of course is the fact that students are not learning on current technology and so when they arrive at clinical they are lacking comfort or knowledge to use "normal" equipment in the hospital due to this disconnect. Often times staff technologists and managers comment that they are surprised students do not know how to operate stretchers or patient beds appropriately as they deem this a simple task.

As a note the completion date depends on if or when funds are allocated- it would be bought ASAP if approved.

Department GoalsUpdate medical equipment to current modern technology students encounter in the clinical setting such as patient transfer stretcher. Also update or fix those that are breaking such as anatomical radiation phantom for quality assurance.

Institutional Goals

Goal How will the initiative support this institutional goal?
A new patient transfer stretcher will assist student learning and help them reach their educational and career goals. They will be able to learn, use, and train on modern equipment comparable to what they see in clinical. Students are tested on patient transfers as part of assessments, but there is a disconnect between what they see in clinical and in school. We want students to be ready for clinical and able to train for employment.

The current stretcher could pose a hazard if the side rail were to break again and catch a student or instructors arm, finger, hand..ect.
This is a wise investment for institutional resources and offers a competitive edge as well for those interested in the program- they can see and rest assured resources are used to provide the newest and latest technology

Outcome Order
Students will have more learning resources to practice for lab practicals in an effect "real-world" simulation 1
Ensure student safety when working with a patient transfer stretcher 2
Students will be able to stretchers in the clinical setting with ease 3
Students will have the opportunity to learn on modern comparable equipment to the clinical setting 4

Assessment Methods

Method Description Other Method Responsible Party
Entrance/Exit Interviews Interviews are conducted with students when they enter college and when they leave—either through graduation or early departure. These interviews can be designed to measure SLO, but can also be used to learn about students’ perceptions, gather feedback, on various college services, activities, etc. We already survey our grads and they have stated we need new equipment
Observations Information can be collected while observing “events” (including, sponsored activities, student {office staff} sessions, etc.) in the natural setting. Observation can provide information on student behaviors and attitudes. in the classroom and clinical setting
Rubrics/ Scoring Guides Rubrics/scoring guides outline identified criteria for successfully completing an activity, assignment, etc. and establish levels for meeting the criteria. They can be used to score everything from essays, engagement, to performances. Students are scored based on using this equipment for patient care (patient transfers)
