Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale | Mission: Provide services and disseminate knowledge about assistive technology for persons with functional impairments of all ages within the college and surrounding community.
The Center would work primarily in three areas:
1. Education - programs for SUNY Orange students, industry professionals, and consumers (the community).
2. Client Assessment and Training – computer access for education and employment - school-aged children, college and or career-oriented individuals, seating and wheeled mobility, augmentative communication, and environmental modification evaluations.
*Services under this area are billable services and will allow for the center to be self sustaining.
3. Dissemination - communicating best practices and information about assistive technology devices and services - publications, databases and training materials.
Activities within these three areas would be multidisciplinary, involving departmental faculty and currently enrolled students from programs such as: architecture, engineering, counseling, physical therapy, nursing, disability services, and education to name a few.
The Center would be utilizing the current OTA Lab space to operate. For the future, acquire new space in the science/technology building or renovate space in BT after the transition.
There would be minimal to no cost to the college to initiate this program. Similar to the Dental Clinic we would need to explore malpractice insurance for the services provided on campus. |
Consequences of this initiative not being funded | Service to current students with disabilities, the community, and consumers of assistive technology will go without or have to travel great distances to receive needed services. SUNY Orange students in the OTA and other related programs (PTA, ARC, EET, EGR, EDU) will not be exposed to the practice of assistive technology. |
