Upgrade autoclave and walk in refrigerator

Initiative TitleUpgrade autoclave and walk in refrigerator
Submitted in Previous Year(s)No
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

The autoclave is used to sterilize media and microbiological specimens (all biohazardous materials before disposal).

The autoclave that is currently in use is old and cannot be repaired without investing a considerable amount of money  (7000.00 for a service contract a year and 7000.00 for parts if parts are even available). If this autoclave breaks, it is our opinion (CLS faculty and Tech Assistant) that a newer and smaller autoclave should be purchased which would be more energy efficient and less costly in repairs.

The walk-in-refrigerator is in the same category of losing the college money. It is at least 40 years old and in the past 4 years has cost us about 25000.00 to repair.

Our suggestion, the next time the refrigerator needs repair,  is to buy 2 large refrigerators which would be energy efficient and less costly for the college.

Consequences of this initiative not being funded

If the autoclave is not replaced when the current one goes down, we would not be able to sterilize our biohazardous materials from the student labs nor would we be able to provide students with media for the microbiology lab.

If the walk-in-refrigerator breaks, we would have to buy refrigerators in an emergency to replace the current one to store our reagents and supplies in a cold temperature. Lab reagents used for our students are expensive and this would add an additional cost of having to repurchase those supplies for students which are not stored at proper temperature.
