Initiative Title | Vernier Deluxe Multi-Probe Package |

Submitted in Previous Year(s) | No |
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale | Vernier Deluxe Multi-Probe Package which include analytical sensor/probes for pH, oxygen, carbon dioxide, as well as an electroconductivity sensor useful for monitoring heart function (heart rate, ECG). This kit also includes optical probes for measuring turbidity, a colorimeter useful in monitoring acid-bare titrations and enzyme readions and biochambers in which mini-experiments to study processes of photosynthesis and respiration can be conducted. It is envisioned that outfitting Introduction to Biology and General Biology I labs (equipment would be shared). Such equipment would allow student hands-on opportunities to collect and analyze data from which to draw conclusions giving them real experience with the scientific method. Such probes represent cutting-edge technology and would greatly expedite lab-based experimentation as related to achieving 'Gen Ed' goals and competencies which such courses are designed to provide. Additionally, access to such probes/sensors would be useful in certain A & P labs (ECG, heart monitor) and Environmental Conservation (water quality monitoring.. For educational programmatic consistency we are requesting funding for 5 Deluxe Kits for each venue where Introduction to Biology is taught (Middletown and Newburgh). In practice, groups of 4 students would work together on lab experiments/exercises so 5 kits would suffice to serve a lab with 20 students. Funding for accessory materials/software is also included in this initiative request. Deluxe package (Middletown (5) and Newburgh (5) $8,285 each. Also, Logger Pro 3 software (2) $498, Biology with Vernier manual - $40. single purchase, Chromebook Laptops (5 each) $1,245 each campus, Total Middletown cost: $9,815, Newburgh cost: $9,815 GRAND TOTal: $19,630

Consequences of this initiative not being funded | If this initiative is not funded experimentation in critical labs will be limited in scope. Students will not have the opportunity to utilize sensor/probe technology and associated software to gather data, construct graphs and analyze experimental results to reach critical conclusions. Enzyme function results, for example, might be measured by "eyeballing" color change or by disappearance of a starch (potato cube) or protein (egg white cube) substrate instead of capturing second-to-second precise absorbance changes via probe technology. In photosynthesis/respiration studies the production of oxygen gas or its utilization can be monitored in real time with great accuracy instead of looking for the appearance/disappearance of bubbles. |
