The goals of the department are to have our lab facilities upgraded to today's safety standards:adjustable chairs with backrests, working safety hoods, and sinks with foot controls to wash hands.
The first and easiest upgrade is the purchase of chairs that are adjustable to the height of the equipment being used by the students such as microscopes. The seats that are currently used are at least 30 years old, They are wooden, falling apart and have no height adjustment capability. This leads to improprer posture, backaches and headaches because students are not correctly positioned to look at their specimens through the microscope. Also, the seats require a back rest for students to lean against after a prolonged time at the miscroscope or other piece of equipment. The Chemistry lab currently has stools that have no padding or back rest which creates severe discomfort to our lab students after sitting on these stools for a prolonged period of time. Microscopes are one of the main pieces of equipment used in the clinical lab and are used extensively in our student labs. The chairs shold not be an impedement to student learning by causing discomfort and pain while students are trying to learn how to use lab equipment.
Our main goal is to replace the chairs in all 3 lab rooms used in the Clinical Science Technology Department ( BT 315, 317, 319)
The wooden chairs in these labs are old and are falling apart. As stated earlier, they have not been replaced for tast 30 years. Injury can result from students continuing to use these chairs that are falling apart.
Newer lab chairs are ergonomic and adjustable so that students can have a better learning experience using microscopes and lab equipment. These chairs should be able to adjust to the height that students need to work at the lab bench
