The Dental Hygiene program is in demand with 80-100 applicants each year. 61 of the 92 last year met the admissions eligibility criteria for acceptance. We still accept 20 students for each class. We are limited by space, equipment and accreditation standards. The major equipment( dental chairs) are still functioning but are getting old and require more expensive repair. An equipment replacement plan would be prudent and there is discussion about expanding the program or investigating how more applicants could be accepted. A long time faculty member will retire 12/23 and it is expected that within the next couple of years there will be another retirement. Retention of first year students has decreased since the COVID pandemic and there is an increased need for student support. The cost of supplies  has also increased and advancement in technologies students need to be exposed to to begin practice is expensive.

Department Goals

Specific things the department wishes to achieve or accomplish this academic year.

# Department Goal
1 To replace clinical equipment that would be considered a capital item and could not be purchased from the instructional line- specifically dental chairs and cabinetry-operator stools and sterilization equipment.
2 To replace and purchase digital sensors for radiographs
3 To obtain an computerized clinical grading and requirement logging system that will generate data efficiently. A digital system has been suggested by accreditation standards.
4 Purchase manikins that are used on the clinical board exam and update the typodont stands for student use in instrumentation and dental materials
5 To purchase another portable nitrous oxide/oxygen unit to supplement the 15 year old units that we have and to accommodate larger class size.
6 To purchase a new Xray model and stand for pediatric patients for student practice with the digital panoramic xray machine
