The campus libraries offer multiple services to students from providing technology access and study spaces to online and in person reference services. To faculty librarians offer information literacy instruction for their students and reference services for their research. Librarians work diligently to select the best electronic and physical research resources. Library staff ensure that the campus community and local residents are welcomed and offered the assistance they ask for.
Drawing from the library’s mission and goals (https://sunyorange.edu/library/using/mission.html) help to turn students into effective researchers so they can achieve their academic goals. In an ever-shifting academic environment the library strives to meet students where they are most comfortable. As more electronic tools become available the library needs to be to leverage them to maintain the library’s level of services.
It is in this light some of the library’s priorities identified here focus on electronic tools, both library and campus scope. A current interest for students and faculty is generative artificial intelligence that can be helpful to research or facilitate academic dishonesty. Students need to learn how critically evaluate this resource which requires a foundation of information literacy. Access to the library’s resources and librarians are important when students need to fact check the information they are using. The library is at the forefront of efforts to teach students to use a variety of information tools.
Library support of faculty research and teaching efforts are also important efforts. The library director is part of the academic support for adopting Open Educational Resources (OER) for classroom use. OERs present an opportunity for faculty to have control over the content of their courses and reduce costs for students. The library plays a part in locating and identifying sources of OER material for classes.
Orange Connect is set up for librarian reference from faculty and students. A tablet kiosk is being proposed at each campus library to encourage student use of Orange Connect. The kiosk would be used to log students into Orange Connect to enter their library sessions when students drop into the library’s reference desk to ask questions. The intended outcome is to increase usage of Orange Connect for connecting with librarians. Once the student’s request is in Orange Connect librarians will be able to track the student’s progress and provide the most helpful reference service with the faculty.
Students who use Orange Connect for library reference would also likely use Orange Connect for other college wide services. This initiative would be an additional effort to work with the library’s promotion efforts to faculty and students to increase use of the campus libraries.
