Student Support Initiatives Office (SSIO)
The Office provides a holistic, seamless approach to students in the areas of academic, financial and personal advising for those who are at risk. Also, students are assisted in locating financial aid resources and scholarships; information about career options; and workshops designed to meet the specific needs of underprepared SUNY Orange students. SSIO works with students who have been re-admitted after being away from the College for at least a year and are returning on academic probation, students in the 24-Credit Hour Program and former TRIO participants.
Vision Statement:
The Student Support Initiatives Offices envisions a future where college retention, graduation, and transfer numbers for academically at-risk students are greatly strengthened by the support and guidance we provide resulting in the students’ successful goal completion. We will provide excellent student services opportunities that are responsive to the needs of the academically at-risk population and help students meet economic, social and environmental challenges to become active participants in shaping the world of the future.
Goal Statement:
Our goal is to ensure that these students stay in college and graduate. We do this by providing holistic academic and personal support services that address their significant needs which might otherwise prevent their success.
Student Learning Objectives:
- Students will identify academic objective/career goal.
- Students will establish a multiple semester Student Education Plan (SEP) of courses required to complete their objective/career goal.
Outcome Indicators:
- Students will attend three contacts per semester with an SSIO staff member. Contacts will be documented in the following manner (1) preliminary development of Student Educational Plan (SEP), (2) academic early alert and academic mid-semester progress report, (3) final semester contact reviewing success of completing the semester’s SEP and planning for the subsequent semester.
- SEP will document a multiple semester plan leading to completion of objective/goal, signed by student indicating comprehension of the plan.
Goals:
- Continue to survey the satisfaction rate of our Restart workshops and Student Success Workshops.
- Continue to monitor the impact of the Restart Workshop.
- Will survey faculty on the usefulness of our electronic Academic Early Alert and Mid Semester notification.
- Continue to change, upgrade and tweak the electronic academic early alert/mid-semester notifications.
- Create a Retention work group to review the academic outcomes of at-risk student populations and support services available to them.
- Progressive technology needs will continue to be explored via grant funding.
- Expand use of ANGEL in student success workshops to provide more on-line support and learning opportunities for students.
