Initiative Title1. Complete a cultural studies degree with several areas of concentration from which a student could choose
Submitted in Previous Year(s)2022
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

The creation of a multi-pronged degree would expand offerings in areas of relevance to students of today, draw and and highlight courses from most of the departments in the liberal arts division, and provide opportunities for faculty and students. We also could increase transfer paths to sister institutions and most importantly, expand our diversity and equity offerings and opportunities.

This is a low cost, but potentially high impact option.

Consequences of this initiative not being funded

While "consequences" seems extreme, two are that we will remain limited in our offerings and miss opportunities to allow students to expand their studies in various cultures, their appreciation of others, and their ability to explore and contribute meaningfully to their world. .

Department GoalsExplore and expand course offerings as appropriate, including DESIJ opportunities, Increase enrollment and retention in IDS and HUM courses, Explore ways to add eportfolio and internship opportunities for students

Institutional Goals

Goal How will the initiative support this institutional goal?
This would offer students a new degree option--with associated experiences and growth opportunities--that is offered at many other institutions. Courses would focus on critical thinking, civic responsibility, creative problem solving, social justice, and leadership as well as soft skills recognized as important by all employers. The degree, offering several areas on which to hone it, would appeal to the varied students of today as they seek to situate themselves in the various communities with which they must engage. This degree also draws upon, highlights, and promotes the variety of experiences and fields found in the Liberal Arts division that can help develop strong capable students for transfer or the workforce.
