1B (View VP Note) Full Time Tenure Track Engineering/ Physics Instructor

Initiative Title1B (View VP Note) Full Time Tenure Track Engineering/ Physics Instructor
Submitted in Previous Year(s)2008
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, RationaleIn recent years all but one of the full time physics and engineering faculty have retired and have not been replaced. With the recent retirement of David Davies and John Cummins the department now finds itself in a precarious position. 80% of the physics and engineering courses are currently being covered by adjunct instructors and retired professors. The rigorous nature of the physics and engineering courses makes finding a qualified adjunct a difficult task. It is imperative that the department secure a full time instructor to maintain the high level of excellence that the engineering program is known for.
Consequences of this initiative not being fundedAt any time our adjuncts could decide not to teach for a semester or two. If this were to happen it is unlikely that a replacement engineering instructor could be found to cover their courses. This would be a minor disaster for the engineering program as it would have a serious impact on the students education.

Prioritization Notes

Level 2 (Business Math Science and Technology, AVP Office)

Highest priority in the BMST Division. Engineering program and Physics offerings are staffed by one full-time instructor (who also serves as dept. chair). There is far too much reliance on adjunct faculty in this specialty area.

Level 3 (Academic Affairs and Student Services, Provost, VP Office)

Numbers 1 - 3 (NEW FACULTY) should be considered as one item. As per previous PBIE requests involving new faculty that are considered a priority.

Level 4 (PBIE Committee)

PBIE ranking 1 for all Faculty positions brought foward. Full Time Tenure Track Faculty—Restored and New ($520,000/$520,000) Once again, the Committee has ranked faculty as our highest strategic need. We have bundled together all eight faculty requests and presented them as our top item. Quality hires serve the Vision and Mission statements and Strategic Plan of the college by providing contact hours with a dedicated full time professional in their field. Whether it is restoring faculty or providing new instructors, the PBIE Committee feels that nothing is more imperative. Some quick facts: 80% of Physics and Engineering courses are currently taught by adjuncts. Only 3% of Movement Science courses are taught by full time faculty. Human Services, a new degree program, has no dedicated full time faculty to teach or coordinate the program. Last academic year, 67 day courses in Mathematics were taught by adjuncts. These concerns can only be addressed by hiring the faculty recommended in item number one.

Level 5 (Cabinet)

Cabinet will also rank "1" for all Faculty positions.
