Accuplacer Next Generation Transition

Initiative TitleAccuplacer Next Generation Transition
Submitted in Previous Year(s)2018
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

Accuplacer will be retiring the Classic version of the Accuplacer test in January 2019. To avoid having this transition happen in the midst of the testing cycle for Spring 2019 students, we need to fully convert to using the Next Generation Accuplacer test by September 1, 2018.  The writing placement test and Ability to Benefit (ATB) tests will not impacted at this time by this change.

Both sections of the Next Generation test are longer than in the Classic version and may require students to complete the test over more than one test session.  This will lead to the need for additional test sessions and therefore, more salary paid to the test proctors.

Consequences of this initiative not being funded

We will no longer be able to accurately assess incoming students' placements into reading and mathematics courses.

Prioritization Notes

Level 2 (Enrollment Mgt and Student Financial Services, AVP Office)

Efficiently offering the Placement Test is critical to the intake process for the majority of new students.  Changes to the examination - which we have only just begun to experience - may require that we offer more test sessions.  Suzanne is being proactive here by requesting both 6 computers (will allow more students per test session) and an increase in the salary line - anticipating more proctor hours.

Level 4 (PBIE Committee)

This was submitted last year and the new Accuplacer tests are already in place. There was no disagreement about supporting this as it will be necessary to provide more computers and more proctors to monitor tests that will more likely be scheduled on more than one testing day. Increasing testing days may actually be beneficial to students as they will not have to take all three parts of the test in one day. Feedback from the college community indicated general support for this initiative. While some departments may be exploring other testing options, this is the current assessment tool being used by the college and this transition needs to be supported.

Level 5 (Cabinet)
