Admissions - Bring more prospective students to campus (emphasis on high academic achievers)

Initiative TitleAdmissions - Bring more prospective students to campus (emphasis on high academic achievers)
Submitted in Previous Year(s)No
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, RationaleWith declining school budgets, school districts have significantly reduced travel for students. As a result, the Admissions Office has seen a significant reduction in campus visits by high school students over the past three years. This funding will be used to provide transportation for school groups to visit either the Middletown and Newburgh campuses. We will also coordinate our efforts with the Honors Program to bring honors prospects to campus. If this initiative proves successful, we will make every effort to fold it into the Admissions Office budget for future years.
Consequences of this initiative not being fundedStudents who have been to the campus for a meaningful visit are more likely to choose SUNY Orange as their college of choice. With a declining number of high school students over the coming years, and more community colleges offering residence options, it is imperative that we bring more high school students to visit the campus. This is even more important for students who are high achievers and have many college choices. The number of Orange County high school graduates is projected to decline over the next 5-7 years. We must be aggressive in recruiting students and campus visits are still a highly effective way of encouraging students to attend.

Prioritization Notes

Level 3 (Student Services, VP Office)

With a decline in the high school population and increased competition this is a good approach. However, it must look beyond high school and seek to bring other groups to campus such as community based agencies that may serve a more varied group of prospective students that span beyond the traditional high school population.

Level 4 (PBIE Committee)

The Admissions Office has seen a significant reduction in campus visits over the last three years, as a result of declining school budgets, which have reduced travel for students. In addition, there will be a decline in the number of students coming out of high schools in Orange County over the coming years. Furthermore, there are more community colleges offering residence, which attracts students to leave the county to attend school elsewhere. The college must be aggressive in recruiting students. The funding to transport students to the either the Newburgh or Middletown campus will result in a meaningful experience, which will increase the likelihood of choosing SUNY Orange. It is intended that efforts will be made to work with the Honors Program to bring honors prospects to the college as well. Campus visits are a highly effective way of encouraging students to learn about the many educational opportunities we provide and have the students ultimately decide to attend SUNY Orange.
