Botanical Center Classroom / Lab - Equiptment Needs; Microscopes, Cell Culture Equiptment, Computers

Initiative TitleBotanical Center Classroom / Lab - Equiptment Needs; Microscopes, Cell Culture Equiptment, Computers
Submitted in Previous Year(s)No
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, RationaleUpon completion of rennovations now in progress, the newly established Botanical Classroom / Lab will require purchase of specific equiptment to support the educational activities planned for the facility. These include microscopes ( 20 ), a Laminar Flow Cell Culture Hood, Incubator ( for cell culture ), and relevant computer technology ( 5 computers )
Consequences of this initiative not being fundedMicroscopes are absolutely necessary to take full advantage of the laboratory component of this facility. Without such instrumentation the use of this facility for instruction of Botany students would be severly compromised; laboratories could not be conducted. Lack of on-site microscopes would also limit the range of workshops and hands-on programming anticipated for community group activities. Computer technology is now a standard resource in science classrooms and laboratories offering students access to internet resources and data management programming. The new facility is envisioned as "state-of -the art " and should include such capability. Cell Culture is an important technique of Biotechnology relating to studies of cell development, genetics and pharmacology. A laminar flow hood and incubator would allow SUNY Orange students to acquire marketable skills in this area.

Institutional Goals

Goal How will the initiative support this institutional goal?
Appropriate equiptment will expand opportunities available to students in Botany and General Biology courses and allow incorporation of critical aspects of biotechnology to be introduced in these classes. This equiptment will extend the range of student research opportunities and development of community programming in areas of horticulture, sustainability and environmental sciemce.
Provide students with enhanced learning opportunities and an expanded range of exposure to hands-on biotechnology techniques and student research projects.

Prioritization Notes

Level 2 (Business Math Science and Technology, AVP Office)

This is important. Actual timing (date) of the completion of the project is needed to be able to determine win which academic year the necessary equipment needs to be purchased. This may be part of AY 2011/12 and AY 2012/13.

Level 4 (PBIE Committee)

The newly established Botanical Classroom / Lab will require purchase of specific equipment to support the educational activities planned for the facility. The requested equipment is necessary to take full advantage of the laboratory component of this facility. Up-to date computer technology is now a standard resource in science classrooms and laboratories offering students access to the necessary resources. The new facility is envisioned as "state-of -the art " and should include such capability. The botanical center equipped will provide students with enhanced learning opportunities and an expanded range of exposure to hands-on biotechnology techniques and student research projects. It will also allow integration of teaching and laboratory work with resources available via internet technology. The appropriate equipment will expand opportunities available to students in Botany and General Biology courses and allow incorporation of critical aspects of biotechnology to be introduced in these classes. This equipment will extend the range of student research opportunities and development of community programming in areas of horticulture, sustainability and environmental science.
