Convert Geology/Physics Instructor to tenure-track

Initiative Title Convert Geology/Physics Instructor to tenure-track
Submitted in Previous Year(s)2022
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

In 2021 Dr. Stillman retired and in 2016 Lawrence O'Brien retired. For AY 2023/24 we hired a one year full-time temp instructor. This fall-23 all of the geology courses were full and closed at the start of the semester and the new hire was over on contractual student headcount.  This is a clear indicator of the importance of this position. Further many of the  AAS programs have added a science requirement to meet the SUNY Gen Ed requirements. Geology is a common science elective and we expect enrollment to increase.

Consequences of this initiative not being funded

It is difficult to find part-time physics/engineering professors with the appropriate background to teach our college level engineering offerings.  If skilled instructors cannot be found we really do not have enough existing  FT faculty to cover all of the courses and lower level physics courses will not be offered.  Maintaining the laboratory spaces and advising students requires the dedication of full time faculty.

Institutional Goals

Goal How will the initiative support this institutional goal?
provide quality advising to students by full-time professional staff
high quality offerings require high quality instructors. Nowhere else is this more true than in engineering due to the rigor of the courses and the program.
