Create Human Service Program Coordinator

Initiative TitleCreate Human Service Program Coordinator
Submitted in Previous Year(s)2008-2009, 2009-2010
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, RationaleProgram has grown to 80+ students on the Middletown campus and 4 at the Newburgh campus (mirroring the first year of Middletown enrollment). With the new Instructor in Newburgh, it is now more important than ever to have a coordinator to bridge the two programs oversee the content of the field placement course to insure consistency. The program is up for SUNY assessment in 2011-2012. With a new Dept. Chair who is unfamiliar with the program, assistance will be necessary. Improve marketing of the program for Newburgh. Develop the certificate program in colaboration with non-credit. Maintain contact with agencies through OCJMHAC for input/update as well as development of a scholarship.
Consequences of this initiative not being fundedProgram failure; not meeting the needs of the community (students as well as human service providers who have come to count on our students as employees) Fail to pass assessment of this program. Fail to increase enrollment at Newburgh and potential loss of a certificate program and scholarship development.

Institutional Goals

Goal How will the initiative support this institutional goal?
By reaching out to market the program in the Newburgh area, we may reach those who have not considered a college degree. Targeting high school students early, presenting information at community group meetings and providing group leaders and clergy with information and a contact person, we are more likely to reach out to new potential students.
Again, having a contact person to market the program in new places could welcome students who may have thought college was not 'accessible" for them.

Prioritization Notes

Level 4 (PBIE Committee)

The creation of a coordinator position would be an important step to ensuring the long-term health of a growing new program at SUNY Orange. The Human Services program is only a few years old, but currently has 89 students enrolled in Middletown and 15 in Newburgh. A growing program of this complexity would be well-served by a single coordinator that could administer and provide a clear vision and understanding of the program’s needs and opportunities. The coordinator would serve as a bridge between the two campuses, oversee field placement for students (one of the most time-intensive activities currently completed by different full-time and adjunct faculty), improve the program’s marketing in Newburgh, develop a certificate program in collaboration with CAPE, and develop scholarship opportunities and maintain contact with human service agencies throughout Orange County.
