Developmentally Appropriate Classroom Reconfigured Multipurpose Design

Initiative TitleDevelopmentally Appropriate Classroom Reconfigured Multipurpose Design
Submitted in Previous Year(s)2008-2009
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, RationaleIn the previously approved submission, without having a specific, identified space, this classroom would have served as a vital "clinic" setting where students could practically apply educational theory in either an early or elementary mini-classroom. There was also a space planned for college instruction to a very small group. The assignment of BT 251 as a much larger space has resulted in a redesigned configuration for the project, offering more mutlipurpose usage. The room will be divided in half, the rear used for the mini-classrooms, and the front for adult instruction and more. Several Education Department classes can be assigned to this room freeing up classroom space around campus. Our SmartBoard currently in a box will be set up here, small special interest forums-guest speakers-Future Teacher Association events-educational displays-advising sessions-and more- can be housed in the flexible space now planned. Part of that reconfiguration includes much more adult instructional and multi-purpose use, and therefore added furnishings and equipment are needed.
Consequences of this initiative not being fundedAdult usage, college lectures, education department events, will be severely limited or eliminated. The current shortage of classrooms for scheduling will continue without the small but significant deletion of some Education Department courses. The large space available in BT 251 will effectively be wasted.

Prioritization Notes

Level 4 (PBIE Committee)

PBIE ranking 6. Developmentally Appropriate Classroom for Education ($10,350) The Education Department is growing with many more students declaring education as a major. In order to keep up with the needs of the students and to provide the best learning experience possible, it is important that this initiative be funded. The need for well-trained and qualified educators is a growing field in Orange County, and this program is designed to help fulfill that need. In order to continue to meet this responsibility and provide greater employment opportunities for our students, this classroom will be a big step. PBIE has already approved a dedicated simulation space for the Education department in BT 251.Although primarily for the Education Department, the work done in this classroom could be of use to other departments and areas doing studies related to education, child psychology and other subjects. On top of this, since several education classes would be assigned to this room, other classroom space would be freed up for other departments. In addition, students will greatly benefit by being able to have a more hands on experience and see how to apply various education strategies. In addition, since BT 251 is a large space, the equipment and other materials requested as part of this initiative will be needed so the space can be used as effectively as possible. In order to keep current with other education programs, and to benefit the students in our SUNY Orange education program, PBIE strongly urges this initiative be funded.
