Initiative Title | Expand course offerings in Psychology to meet the needs of the Allied Health Programs, JRTEP, and Human Services and Honors Program |
Submitted in Previous Year(s) | 2008 |
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale | Over the past 2 years, enrollment has increased by more than 10%. The majority of programs offered through the college require students to take General Psychology I. The course Psychology of Adjustment has all but been eliminated to allow full-time faculty to offer General I. However, with the increased demand resulting from enrollment, the department cannot meet the needs with only 5 full-time members. The Honors program has requested 3 General Psychology I courses for the year, this is up from 1 course per year. Furthermore, we were recently told that the Diagnostic Imaging program was considering eliminating PSY 102 because there weren't enough sections to meet the demands. The new Human Service Program requires PSY 102 as well as an upper level Psych course. Full-time instructors are being pulled from Intro. to cover these demands without impairing programs such as JRTEP, OT and PTA - unfortunately, we are not meeting the increased demands.
Unfortunately, most adjunct faculty are available after 5 pm. Those who are available during the day do not have the Psychology concentration that is required for General I and Developmental Courses. (Most have a degree in counseling, which does not include any coursework in the areas to be taught) |
Consequences of this initiative not being funded | New program and concentration will not meet the growing needs of your community. The department will be forced to reduce the number of introductory sections to meet the need and demand of upper level courses offerings. With enrollment increasing in these economic times, the demand for General Psychology will not be possible. General Psychology is a requirement in all AA degree programs, most transfer programs and many AAS programs.
Hiring of faculty who are not qualified to teach General Psychology nor Developmental Courses. Hiring of individuals who create 'unhealthy" situations for our students resulting in the possibility of legal issues. |
