Faculty "Buy out" Stipends

Initiative TitleFaculty "Buy out" Stipends
Submitted in Previous Year(s)No
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, RationaleThis would provide the funding to "buy" faculty from other departments to teach (as an individual or as part of a team) a three-credit course in Interdisciplinary Studies until such time as faculty are hired specifically for the the department. Department chairs would then have the funds to hire a replacement adjunct. Even after that time, it is probable that faculty from other disciplines would continue to be interested in and have the knowledge base needed for courses in the area. Interdisciplinary courses would allow faculty to occasionally teach something of special interest that could not be done in their home departments, allowing for professional development and diversity.
Consequences of this initiative not being fundedWithout the funding, department chairs, justifiably, might be reluctant to allow faculty to participate as they must cover their basic departmental course needs.
