Faculty Mentor, Newburgh

Initiative TitleFaculty Mentor, Newburgh
Submitted in Previous Year(s)No
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, RationaleA Faculty Mentor assigned to the Newburgh campus would work primarily with adjunct faculty to promote excellence in teaching. Currently over 85 adjunct faculty teach courses in Newburgh, day and evening, and this number continues to grow, yet there is no academic support for them in residence in Newburgh. The Mentor would serve as a bridge between the Newburgh faculty and the academic associate vice presidents, department chairs, departmental mentors, and CTL personnel at the Middletown campus, providing guidance in the areas of academic policy, classroom management, evaluation methods and grading, educational technology, academic advising, and effective teaching & learning techniques. The Mentor's responsibilities would include meeting with department chairs at the start of the semester to establish goals for Newburgh faculty; orienting new adjuncts to the Newburgh campus, including services, procedures, equipment, and support staff; organizing training sessions with Newburgh faculty to acquaint them with attendance reporting requirements and other functions in Banner, as well as communication functions via Portal; consulting with adjunct faculty to create clear and consistent syllabi and realistic expectations of students; promoting effective teaching and learning via individual consultations and small-group workshops; visiting classes, upon request, to provide support for faculty on issues of pedagogy and classroom management; supporting faculty efforts to enrich the academic environment, including bringing in guest speakers, organizing films and panel discussions, and planning field experiences for students; serving as a member of the Academic Affairs Leadership Team; consulting with the Associate Vice President, Newburgh, in developing effective programs and activities for Newburgh faculty.
Consequences of this initiative not being fundedLack of consistency in courses, policies, and services provided students in Newburgh; increasing difficulty in attracting and retaining adjunct faculty in Newburgh.
