Critical Information, Notes, Justification, RationaleTo meet dire instructional needs of the Department created by : 1. Increased student demand (student contact hours per semester has increased more than twofold since 2000. 2. Increased course offerings at NEC 3. Participation in Honors Program, DL offerings (Prehistoric Life, Biology for Today, and Nutrition - expected). 4. Constraints placed by the "720" (student contact hours/year) and the "240" (student head count/year) loading provisions of the new faculty contract.
Consequences of this initiative not being fundedLimitations on course offerings, increased dependence on adjuncts, lowered faculty morale and decreased academic quality of the Biology Program. This will also impact the proposed development of new courses (Ecology, Nutrition-DL) within the Department .

Prioritization Notes

Level 2 (Business Math Science and Technology, AVP Office)

The biology dept full time to part time ratio is 37% full time faculty teach the classes on load. A new tenure track faculty member was added to help relieve this burden. With the new 240 student max per year, all biology faculty will exceed that limit making it impossible to stay with in contractual guidlines and serve the 2,700 plus students per week taking bio classes.

Level 4 (PBIE Committee)

This is one of 4 full-time faculty positions that are collectively grouped as PBIE's Priority #1. We believe that each faculty position is equally needed but the PIP system at this time will not accept repeat ranks. The Cabinet has been informed that these positions are of equal ranking and that all 4 are the highest priority. This was clearly the easiest item for the committee to approve. We are wholly committed to the hiring of new full time tenure track faculty in the areas specified above. There are clearly other areas that require staffing, but these are some of the most critical. A quality education is simply not possible without dedicated full time teachers with up to date professional qualifications. No area is likely to have a more immediate impact on students or on the mission of the college than this one. PBIE hopes these new persons will be joining our learning community shortly.
