Full time technical assistant for Math Resource Room HA 305

Initiative TitleFull time technical assistant for Math Resource Room HA 305
Submitted in Previous Year(s)No
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, RationaleThis position should be set at Staff Grade 2. It requires at least a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics. Duties would be to supervise the lab, hire, schedule and train all tutors, form study groups, conduct focus groups and oversee all workings of the lab. This person would also work very closely with the developmental students in the learning communities that are being formed. Over the last six months I visited three community colleges while investigating the efficacy of self-paced instruction. During these visits I had access to functioning math resource rooms similar to our own. In all three instances there was at least one professional supervising the mathematics resource room. Hudson Valley Community College had three full time faculty, Dutchess County Community College had two professionals, one working 25 hours a week and the other working 10 hours and Bronx Community College had one full time professional. Although our mathematics lab works very well, I believe that it would work far more effectively if there was a full time supervisor. This initiative would enhance retention for all majors and courses requiring mathematics but would be especially helpful to developmental students.
Consequences of this initiative not being fundedWe continue operating as we do now, which frankly is an effective operation. However I think the success and retention rate would be significantly inproved with this additional allocation of these requested resources.

Prioritization Notes

Level 4 (PBIE Committee)

The current Math Lab serves a vast population of students each semester, providing them with the required assistance to be successful in the math course(s) they are taking. While the current operation of the lab provides the students with assistance they are in need of, a full-time person dedicated to the supervision and mission of this lab would greatly improve the quality of service provided. Every single degree program on campus has a required mathematics component, making it necessary for almost every student to have to take a mathematics course. The reality is that math is a subject that many students have tremendous difficulty with. Providing our students with a strong support system outside the classroom is essential to their success. The Math Lab is typically open for business 50-55 hours each semester with students utilizing the lab during almost every operating hour and the Tutorial Center typically has to put students in need of tutoring on a waiting list after the 2nd week of classes. A full-time person would have the time and resources to improve and expand the services offered, resulting in reducing attrition and increasing retention.
