Hire a full-time Career Service Professional to work with interns, work study students, and undeclared majors.

Initiative TitleHire a full-time Career Service Professional to work with interns, work study students, and undeclared majors.
Submitted in Previous Year(s)2016
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

We currently have a grant available which provides a full-time person to assist with the internships.  The grant will expire the end of 2019 and we will once again be without any additional help to meet the needs of the internship placements. The retirement of both the Director and the Assistant Director may free up some money which would make it possible to hire an additional person.

Consequences of this initiative not being funded

We anticipate that the demand for applied learning activities within the Guided Pathway model will increase.  Not funding an additional professional position will make it difficult to meet all needs.

Prioritization Notes

Level 3 (Student Services, VP Office)

The impending retirements of both the Director and Assistant Director of Career and Internship Services means this office will be re-establishing itself in the coming academic year.  Add to this the importance placed on early career exploration within the framework of Guided Pathways and the need to sustain an internship coordinator after the PIF grant ends is perhaps more critical than it has been.  Please note - the internship specialist also works closely with those academic departments (eg Business, CIT, Human Services, etc) that have an internship requirement as part of the degree plan.

Level 4 (PBIE Committee)

Currently, Student Services has been working on a grant funded position whose primary focus is to help students find internships and possible work study placements. That grant funding will run out in 2019.  With the college’s emphasis on guided pathways, along with the anticipated retirement of two professional staff members in the department this upcoming year, it’s important to have the available support and resources for our students to be successful in their field of study and/or assist them with determining their area(s) of interest or study.

Level 5 (Cabinet)
