Hire a Full-time Instructional Designer

Initiative TitleHire a Full-time Instructional Designer
Submitted in Previous Year(s)No
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

In order to increase the amount of hybrid and distance learning courses offered through SUNY Orange and assist faculty in the continual effective design of their course shells, an Instructional Designer/New Media Specialist is needed within the Center for Teaching and Learning. This priority has been determined through the new Strategic Plan and will likely support the recommendations of the upcoming Academic Master Plan.

Consequences of this initiative not being funded

Due to overall decreases in enrollment, the addition of newly developed online and hybrid courses and programs would provide the opportunity for SUNY Orange to expand its offerings locally and nationally. However, in order to develop more courses, degrees and/or certificates that are 100% online, faculty and students must be supported by an Instructional Designer who is solely focused on that task. Increased course shell design and enhanced focus on effective teaching strategies, innovative pedagogy, and online assessment cannot be adequately supported with current staffing levels.

Department GoalsHost three training sessions per month designed to facilitate the transition from Angel to the Blackboard Learning Management System in preparation for a full migration by fall 2016., Continue to support and provide training for college faculty, staff and administration on effective and emerging pedagogical and technological teaching and learning best practices.

Institutional Goals

Goal How will the initiative support this institutional goal?
The addition of an Instructional Designer will support both the 2015-2020 Strategic Plan and 2015-2020 Academic Master Plan through the support of new and veteran faculty in the development and design of new online and hybrid courses. In order to stay current with innovative instructional design pedagogy and assessment methods, an instructional designer solely focused on online and hybrid courses could propel SUNY Orange into a more competitive position to recruit students who prefer the online format due to full-time familial and employment obligations.
