| Initiative Title | Hire two full-time qualified faculty members |
| Submitted in Previous Year(s) | 2007-08 |
| Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale | The Laboratory Technology Department has three programs (Medical Laboratory Technology, Phlebotomy and Microbiology for the Health Professions service course). The department currently has one full time faculty member and a department chair. The Medical Laboratory Technology and the Phlebotomy Programs are both nationally accredited programs. Qualified part-time faculty that meet the strict accreditation standards are difficult to acquire especially since there is a shortage of medical laboratory professionals in the field and overtime is readily available. Furthermore, medical laboratory professionals in the state of New York must be licensed beginning September 2006 and the entry level to the profession will be a medical laboratory technician who has completed a program such as ours. Therefore, the department feels that our MLT program will be in greater demand in the state and we are currently experiencing more enrollment.
The Laboratory Technology Department provides the Microbiology for the Health Professions service course to both the Nursing Department and the Dental Hygiene Department. Enrollment in these courses in projected to increase and the number of sections of the course will need to increase to meet the needs. Qualified faculty are also required to teach this course. |
| Consequences of this initiative not being funded | MLT Accreditation requirements for faculty will not be met.
The Nursing and Dental Hygiene Department students will be limited by the number of sections of the Microbiology of the Health Professions course and may take longer to complete their degree.
The MLT program will not be as effective in servicing the needs of New York State and the laboratory profession.
Expansion of the Medical Laboratory Technology, Nursing and Dental Hygiene programs will not occur. |
