Honors Contract Option

Initiative TitleHonors Contract Option
Submitted in Previous Year(s)2009-2010
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, RationaleCurrently students at the Newburgh Campus do not have access to the Honors program unless they travel to the Middletown campus for a substantial portion of their coursework. For many Newburgh students, this is not possible--nor should we expect it of students coming expressly to SUNY Orange to take their full academic program in Newburgh. Gifted Newburgh students are denied the intellectual stimulation that Honors programs and courses provide, but they also are denied other benefits of participation in the Honors program: scholarship opportunities, faculty recommendations regarding work in Honors courses, stronger admissions applications upon transfer, and recognition at Commencement. Given the smaller campus population, we need to implement an Honors Contract Option for Newburgh students whereby students contract with faculty and the Honors program coordinator to complete Honors-level work in a non-Honors course, thereby qualifying to graduate as an Honors Major Graduate.
Consequences of this initiative not being fundedThe current situation is not equitable. Unless we implement this option, Newburgh students will continue to be cut off from an enriched academic experience and the many benefits it provides.

Prioritization Notes

Level 1 (Newburgh Campus)

This initiative supports the Honors Program initiative to expand the program to the Newburgh Campus.

Level 3 (Newburgh Campus)

This initiative supports the Honors Program's initiative to expand the Honor's Program to the Newburgh Campus.

Level 4 (PBIE Committee)

Currently Newburgh students are not offered the opportunity of participating in the Honor’s program without traveling to the Middletown campus to complete a large portion of their required Honor’s coursework. With the recent establishment of Newburgh as a branch campus, it is important that we offer our Newburgh students as many educational opportunities as our Middletown students, especially participation in the Honor’s program. Denying our Newburgh students this opportunity would be a disservice and would not afford them educational opportunities they deserve as SUNY Orange students.
