Lab School Foundational Training Retreat

Initiative TitleLab School Foundational Training Retreat
Submitted in Previous Year(s)No
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, RationaleThe new SUNY Orange Lab School, with its Kindercollege and Universal Pre-K components, will be fully in operation by late August 2012. The lab school will ideally be a model of the best practices in early childhood education, in order for our education students to observe in practice the methods being taught in their education courses. For the lab school to be a reflection of the education department\'s teachings and for the education department to have an understanding of the Lab School\'s everyday practices there needs to a strong relationship based on much communication. To facilitate this relationship an intensive training/retreat in early August of 2012 would be ideal. A preliminary meeting would allow the Education Department faculty and Lab School teaching staff to come together and discuss their philosophies/practices. Once this philosophical understanding has been established, joint training time in areas of mutual interest will begin to build a shared knowledge/philosophical base. Over the years this foundational base can continue to be built upon through regular discussions, shared trainings or retreats of a shorter duration, and by attending conferences together.
Consequences of this initiative not being fundedIf we do not have this opportunity to build a shared philosophical foundation, the Lab School may ultimately be a beautiful building with a campus childcare facility and Universal Pre-K rooms in it, which is disconnected from the curriculum being taught at the college and may not serve as a model for our students. Ultimately the school might be like any of other field placement sites, where students may see some of what we are promoting in our program, but also much of what we are hoping to discourage. This would be unfortunate since we have the opportunity, with enough desire, time, and resources to create a true model of early childhood education at its best.

Institutional Goals

Goal How will the initiative support this institutional goal?
The curriculum for the education department would be greatly enhanced by having the lab school be a model of the best practices in early childhood education. It is one thing to read about and discuss educational philosophies, but a whole higher level of instruction to be able to observe and participate in the practice of those philosophies.
