Laboratory Technical Assistant, Kaplan Hall

Initiative TitleLaboratory Technical Assistant, Kaplan Hall
Submitted in Previous Year(s)No
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, RationaleBeginning in January 2011, Kaplan Hall will open six state-of-the-art laboratories supporting courses in anatomy and physiology, biology, general science, microbiology, chemistry, and--temporarily--criminal justice. Each of the labs will house new technical equipment as well as potentially hazardous materials and biological specimens requiring special care. A laboratory technical assistant, shared between the four departments using the labs, will oversee the maintenance, inventory, set-up, and safety of the labs, while assisting faculty in setting up and breaking down laboratory exercises for students.
Consequences of this initiative not being fundedInability to ensure the health, safety and security of laboratory equipment and supplies; inability to provide support for faculty planning student activities in the labs; inability to expand course offerings in the sciences due to a lack of laboratory support.

Institutional Goals

Goal How will the initiative support this institutional goal?
This initiative will enable us to offer high-quality courses and programs in the sciences comparable to those offered at the Middletown campus, a clear goal of the academic, facilities, and enrollment management plans.
Providing laboratory technical support at the Newburgh Campus will enable the college to expand its science offerings there as well as programs, such as various Associate in Science degrees and additional programs in allied health, which require laboratory coursework.
The laboratory technical assistant will enable us to maintain the safety, security, and cleanliness of our new state-of-the-art laboratory facilities.

Prioritization Notes

Level 1 (Newburgh Campus)

This initiative supports similar requests of the departments of Biology, Science, Engr. & Arch, and Laboratory Technology for laboratory support at the Newburgh Campus.

Level 3 (Newburgh Campus)

This initiative supports similar requests of the departments of Biology, Science, Engr. & Arch, and Laboratory Technology.

Level 4 (PBIE Committee)

The opening of Kaplan Hall in January 2011 will include 6 state-of-the-art computer labs, supporting courses in the sciences and criminal justice. It is necessary to have a laboratory technical assistant to oversee the maintenance, inventory, set-up, and safety of these labs. The technical assistance will also assist faculty in setting up and breaking down laboratory exercises for students. Without a Lab Tech Assistant, there will be no support for faculty in planning student activities in the labs and inability to expand course offerings in the sciences due to a lack of laboratory support. The initiative is already covered in the budget.
