Microscope Slides with demonstrations of various biologic specimens in support of Introduction to Biology (BIO 110) labs

Initiative TitleMicroscope Slides with demonstrations of various biologic specimens in support of Introduction to Biology (BIO 110) labs
Submitted in Previous Year(s)No
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

Sets of slides (typically 1 slide/student) to critically observe and study during laboratory periods to appreciate cellular and histologic structure and become familiar with various processes of cell replication (Mitosis), gametogenesis, (Meiosis), and early embryonic development.

Introduction to Biology is a course taken by non-majors to satisfy the GE2 requirement in natural sciences and also serves as a prerequisite for the A & P 1 and 2 sequence required of Health Profession students.  It is a highly enrolled course and is offered in multiple sections at both the Middletown and Newburgh Campuses.

NOTE:  Student performance on weekly quizzes and practical exams will be monitored to see potential beneficial effect of the supporting models.  Student feedback will also be monitored.

Consequences of this initiative not being funded

Microscopic demonstration slides allow students to gain hands-on opportunities to study and appreciate cellular, histologic, and functional aspects of living systems.  Such slides are subject to damage and loss even during normal use as dyes (stains) used to bring forth structural details fade under the intense illumination required by microscopy while others (being glass) are easily chipped or broken during use or cleaning.  For the most part this request represents replacement of slides too faded for meaningful use.
