Orange Hall Theatre Maintenance and Improvements

Initiative TitleOrange Hall Theatre Maintenance and Improvements
Submitted in Previous Year(s)2009-2010
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, RationaleThe Orange Hall Theatre is a multi-use facility. In addition to supporting curriculum, it also serves as a venue for campus and community events. Some of the equipment is aging and must be replaced. Additionally, because of the growing number of events held in the theatre, new exuipment is needed. Note that since this initiative was submitted in the previous year, we have had some very significant issues related to equipment failure and fire hazzards. A memo was forwarded to the AVP for Liberal Arts, the VPAA and the Director of Facilities and Administrative Services to this effect. This is no longer only an antequated equipment issue, it is now a safety issue as well.
Consequences of this initiative not being fundedFacility cannot support the needs of the college and community and may not be able to continue operating given the safety hazzards related to the current equipment.

Prioritization Notes

Level 4 (PBIE Committee)

The Orange Hall Theatre serves the entire college community and is the focal point for cultural programming on campus. It is showing its age in various respects, some of which are safety issues. The college addressed some of these issues this fall by replacing 30 year old lighting fixtures. We are still using lighting inventory of comparable age and it should be replaced soon also. Our students need to graduate from SUNY Orange experienced in the use of equipment which is standard in the industry. The stage has been, and continues to be used as a storage space for recycled scenery and props. The safety issues this practice raises are obvious when students are working on the stage or rehearsing. The problem is especially acute when the end of semester concerts and performances are presented. Items with utility are currently dismantled and disposed of, which is contrary to the spirit of the campus wide Initiative on Sustainability, wasteful and expensive over the long term. The recent additions of audio equipment have enhanced live event presentations in the Orange Hall Theatre. The theatre control booth is now cramped. Additionally, it was not designed for the type of live event and recording tasks that we now routinely support. It needs to be expanded and redesigned to accommodate new equipment and a new mission.
