Part-time lab support person for our Chemistry, Physics, Geology, and 3-D FabLabs.

Initiative Title Part-time lab support person for our Chemistry, Physics, Geology, and 3-D FabLabs.
Submitted in Previous Year(s)2022
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

The department offers a wide variety of laboratory courses in Chemistry, Geology, Physics, Astronomy and 3-D printing. We are in need of a part-time support person to help maintain and repair this vast array of equipment. This person would also oversee open hours in the FabLab for students to complete their projects.

Consequences of this initiative not being funded

We are having trouble maintaining the equipment in the labs. It is "easier" to just purchase new replacement equipment, but repairing and maintaining what we already have would be more economical. Also the 3-D lab space requires an extra-ordinary amount of time and dedication. More that can be asked of any full-time faculty member. The 3-D lab equipment is an important aspect of the engineering and the architecture programs. We are also interested in developing a Digital Arts class and in offering CAPE courses. None of this will be possible if we can not maintain and monitor the 3-D lab room.
