Critical Information, Notes, Justification, RationalePeer mentors will provide guidance and support to freshman students. More specifically, mentors will help freshman students explore their interests and goals; encourage and facilitate their engagement in campus activities; provide appropriate referral to campus resources, activities, and programs; and share strategies with freshman students for succeeding in college. Peer mentors will go through a leadership training program designed to prepare them for this special role, and will work with college staff and one another to develop activities of interest and value for their freshman peers .
Consequences of this initiative not being fundedRetention studies show consistently that student engagement is crucial in promoting persistence and success in college. The peer mentor program will promote engagement, both in our freshman students and in the mentors working with them.

Level 3 (Newburgh Campus)

This initiative supports the Student Services Division's efforts to improve retention through activities promoting student engagement.

Level 4 (PBIE Committee)

This initiative to provide a peer mentor program in Newburgh supports the College’s ongoing mission to improve retention. The peer mentors will help freshman students learn about the many support services available and will provide advice and guidance in becoming a successful student. This program is similar to the Ambassador and Peer Mentor programs that have already been developed and implemented on the Middletown campus.
