PM Express at NEC

Initiative TitlePM Express at NEC
Submitted in Previous Year(s)No
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, RationaleNEC is currently at maximum capacity for classrooms in the evening and approaching maximum capacity in the mornings. By implementing "PM Express" --a schedule of once-a-week, 3-hour classes in the afternoons (12-3 or 3-6 p.m.)--we will be able to both expand our course offerings while offering students an alternative to the current course schedule and the opportunity to obtain up to six credits a semester while attending one day a week. We're also hopeful this scheduling option will be attractive to full-time faculty and retired faculty who may be willing to teach in Newburgh provided they have to travel here only once a week in daylight hours. This initiative is not costly--but will take a close collaboration between department chairs, faculty, staff, and NEC personnel to select the right courses, market the new scheduling option, and advise students appropriately.
Consequences of this initiative not being fundedEnrollment at NEC will soon plateau, since classroom space in the evening and mornings is at maximum capacity. Students needing a once-weekly, daytime option for attending classes will continue to be prevented from attending college. Furthermore, we will not achieve the enrollment growth we need to reach FTE targets for the opening of the new branch campus due to limited space at the current extension site.
