Prepare to partner ESL and HSE students for professional certification

Initiative TitlePrepare to partner ESL and HSE students for professional certification
Submitted in Previous Year(s)No
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

Short term Pell grants and Workforce Development grants integrated with the ESL and HSE programs would afford students in these programs to combine their study with studying in courses to prepare for professional certification in fields such as Pharmacy Technician, Medical Administrative Assistant and LPN. A workforce coordinator would design the combination of ESL classes and/or HSE diploma recipients with their hours of study to include courses for certification in these fields.

Consequences of this initiative not being funded

ESL and HSE students would not receive help with professional certification to offer their contribution to a diverse workforce equity and improved economic and professional status.

Institutional Goals

Goal How will the initiative support this institutional goal?
The Workforce Initiative will be driven by local and regional employer needs. Pre-employment training will lead to enhanced workplace skills and academic skills for our students. Training workshops will be designed in tandem with employers leading to the attainment of industry wide credentials that qualify students for jobs. This collaborative effort will be spearheaded by a Workforce Development Coordinator, collaborating and planning with local government sources and employers. The coordinator will conduct a workplace needs assessment with employers to determine their needs.
Employers will identify critical shortages within their industry and provide a map of the skills needed for students to train for specific positions. This effort will be supported in part by ITAs or training vouchers and short term Pell Grants.
This program will support ESL and HSE who are lacking essential workplace skills needed for entry level positions.
Trainees will earn industry wide credentials qualifying them for employment opportunities.
We will assess what works in the fields of manufacturing, technology and the medical fields with our Hudson Valley Community College partners.
