Reach out to our current partners (and explore new partnerships) to discuss new ways for our students to participate in field experiences

Initiative TitleReach out to our current partners (and explore new partnerships) to discuss new ways for our students to participate in field experiences
Submitted in Previous Year(s)No
Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

One of the cornerstones of the SUNY Orange Education Department is our commitment to having students participate in valuable field experiences. The current global pandemic has severely limited our students' ability to engage in these critical experiences.  Since going remote in the Spring 2020 semester, SUNY has supported our faculty and students by purchasing access to ATLAS, a library of videos of teachers teaching in real classrooms, and we have been able to have students watch these videos and complete corresponding assignments.  However, SUNY has made it clear that they may not be able to continue supporting this.  Although we plan to use the ATLAS library for as long as it is supported, we would like to investigate other ways for our students to gain valuable field experience hours.  Some of our early childhood students are currently completing hours in an outdoor, socially distanced preschool.  Doing more of this may be a possibility.  Additionally, we are hoping to investigate partnerships with public schools, where students may be able to join in on virtual (or in person, eventually) teaching and learning situations.

Consequences of this initiative not being funded

This initiative does not currently need funding, but may need funding if SUNY does not support the purchase of ATLAS.

Institutional Goals

Goal How will the initiative support this institutional goal?
If the department can forge partnerships with local area school districts that will allow students to observe virtual teaching, that could be considered a way that we use technology to meet students' needs.
The department is hoping to strengthen existing partnerships with local area schools and child care centers, and to establish new partnerships with sites we are not currently using.
We hope to integrate meaningful alternatives to field experiences (or modified versions of in-person experiences) in our courses. One of those courses is a gateway course in the JRTEP B-6 program.

Observations Information can be collected while observing “events” (including, sponsored activities, student {office staff} sessions, etc.) in the natural setting. Observation can provide information on student behaviors and attitudes. The EDU Dept. will reflect on the quality of the field experience opportunities and determine whether these partnerships should continue or cease.
