Critical Information, Notes, Justification, Rationale

Students' feedback regarding their need for help with study habits and testing skills are consistently among top four recommendations in Planning Reports for every cohort that we administered the College Student Inventory. While in the past these workshops were not utilized by a majority of our students, we hope that with the Guided Pathways model approach, we can embed this type of support as part of their required learning activities making these resources readily available to any student.

Consequences of this initiative not being funded

We have a large number of first generation students on-campus. This type of resource is needed to help students develop necessary skills to be directed, focused and engaged learners. The videos included in this initiative are:

Study Tips & Note-Taking Strategies
Discover Your Learning Style Preferences
Time Management: Strategies For Success
How to Reduce Test Anxiety
Exploring Careers & Choosing A Major

These videos are available online, are close captioned, and provide follow up activities and resources. They also allow tracking of student participation.

Institutional Goals

Goal How will the initiative support this institutional goal?
Time constraints hinder students ability to utilize resources while on-campus. The online format of the Student Lingo videos make them readily available to students while covering a variety of student success topics.
Student Lingo videos are a series of interactive online workshops (about 30 minutes long) that include action plans, and activities designed to help students develop their college skills and guidelines to explore career options. Given that the composition of our student population includes a large percentage of part-time students with limited availability on-campus and an increasing number of online learners, the delivery format of this resource provides easy access regardless of location and time.
Incoming students express the need to develop their college skills. Student Lingo workshops provide thorough information about different topics that students can review at their leisure.

Prioritization Notes

Level 3 (Student Services, VP Office)

Student Lingo videos are available 24/7 and were used by students when we had the Title III grant.  This is a low cost subscription to meet the  need for virtual workshops of high quality that students can access online.

Level 4 (PBIE Committee)

This subscription was formerly supported by the Title III grant. Its purpose is to help facilitate students’ successful transition to college in support of Guided Pathways. The committee feels this type of resource is important as many of us see students lacking the basic soft and hard skills to be successful students. Committee members are in favor of having this type of resource available to students, but suggest some research be done to determine if Student Lingo is the best option.  Having this type of resource available to students will likely have a positive impact on student retention.

Level 5 (Cabinet)

Some funding found but need additional funds to sustain subscription.
